I know there have been people patiently or impatiently lol waiting for my Dune HD TV3. D review, so the time has finally arrived. How does it fare against the previous Dune models such as the Smart D1 or BD Prime 3. Hardware The box At the front of the box you will find the IR LEDOn the left side of the case is a bay to slide in an internal 2. On the right side is a USB 2. SD card input. To the back you will see your usual array of inputs and outputs. Here is a picture of all the goods, which includes a USB 3. HDMI cable, Wireless antenna, IR extender cable, remote control w batteries, and power plug. You may be thinking that the case looks awfully familiar, and you are right, as it is the same case used for the TV3. I reviewed last year. It is a very simple and sturdy fanless aluminum case. It wont win any awards for design, but has the perfect form factor to hide away in a cabinet or even attached to the back of a TV with the benefit of the IR extender. UI Appearance The UI has undergone a bit of an overhaul from the previous Dune series, going with a simpler icon view although you can switch back to the previous UI by changing the skinOnce you get past the main menu though navigating around has the same look and feel as the previous Dune models. One of the biggest changes with the TV3. D versus the previous Dunes with the exception of the previous TV series is the removal of full BD Menu support thanks to Cinavia. This means that the TV3. D relies on BD lite when playing back Blu ray folder rips. When you go to play back a Blu ray folder rip or ISO you will be greeted with all available playlists to choose from sorted by timecode, so the main movie should be the first playlist. Since there is no full menu support, while watching a Blu ray folder rip a simplified BD Lite menu will appear that will allow you to navigate between chapters, audio tracks, subtitles, etc The only downside I can see from this, if you are watching a full disc rip you will need to stop and re select the movie if you want to choose a different playlist. So as you can see, the UI is relatively basic and clean. One of my biggest criticisms in the past has always revolved around the UI, where the user is forced to navigate around in hopes of getting to a jukebox. Well, with the TV3. D and hopefully coming to all other Dune players in an upcoming firmware update, there is a new feature which allows you to boot directly into your jukebox of choice see the Third Party Jukebox section for more information. ResponsivenessRemote Control The remote control is IR based which means direct line of sight is needed. The layout is basically the same as all previous Dune remotes, with just a few different buttons There is a TV button in place of the Eject button. Previous Dune remotes work without an issue as well with the TV3. D. Also included is an IR Extender which I am a big fan of, especially since due to the size of the TV3. D you could easily mount it behind a TV or out of site. Navigating around I found the TV3. D to be relatively snappy, feeling a little quicker then the previous Dune models in moving around the various menussettings. There was not a big jump in performance, and I saw no difference when accessing my jukeboxes which are stored on the network. Network Performance The TV3. D has a gig. E NIC and was able to recognize smb set up on my Windows Home Server. For whatever reason though I could not get it to see my nfs set up nor have I ever been able to with any of my Dunes, so testing will be done solely via smb. Using the infamous bird scene from Planet Earth I was able to play back without issue the 1. Mbps clip via smb, with the same results using a jellyfish clip. The smb performance is markedly improved via smb over the previous Dune models where I would top out at 7. Mbps. Of course, the main question, how does the TV3. D handle playback of high bitrate content over the network, in particular Blu ray and 3. D Blu ray rips both ISO and folder rips. Using smb, 2. D Blu ray played back with very little issue, which was to be expected. Since I couldnt get nfs to work which has been the only protocol I have been able to stream Blu ray 3. Ds effectively I was concerned that smb wouldnt cut it. I was pleasantly surprised to see that smb on the TV3. D was up to the task, playing back Blu ray 3. Ds. I wont lie, I am still a little skeptical about Blu ray 3. D over smb maybe because I have seen it fail on the other players I have tested, but it appears that Dunes outstanding smb performance on its previous players carries through here. Cables, connectors and adapters the curse of technology from the day the light bulb was invented. Lacking the right cable with the right connector can bring the highest high tech to its knees. Ive been the victim of this scourge numerous times. The long sought goal to connect a TV to a PC is no exception. Its also one of the most common. Perhaps youve encountered it. PCs and TVs MERGING FROM BOTH DIRECTIONSA lot has changed since PCs and TVs first started trying to hook up. They used to be completely separate industries. Today, both are coming together from their respective directions, competing and cooperating at the same time to create extraordinary interactive communications products. Smart TVs are browsing the Internet just as you would on a computer, while also providing access to online video such as Netflix, Hulu, Facebook and others. Computers are integrating more closely and more easily with televisions so people can turn their small screen displays into big screens, and watch videos that only exist on the computer. This is becoming simpler every day. It used to be this complicated jumble of incompatible cables, connectors and video standards. Now, wireless technology and standardized cables have provided an easy solution for how to connect your TV to a PC. An extension of this has also spawned a growing trend called two screen viewing. Its another way television and computers are merging. Watch Your Facebook Videos On Your TVNow that youve connected your TV and computer, why not watch your favorite Facebook videos on your big screen. Download Real. Player so you can easily save your Facebook videos and watch on your PC with just one click. THREE WAYS TO CONNECT THE TWO WORLDS1. Wi Fi is the current rage. TVs have it built in, or an easily added Wi Fi module that plugs into a USB port on the TV. Computers have been wireless for years. Its only natural that Wi Fi would be the uniting factor in making PCs and television come together. Because video is so data intensive, you need all the speed a Wi Fi network can offer. The best results come from whats known as the 8. Its the fastest consumer Wi Fi available now. Wi Fi plus cable. Here, a Wi Fi equipped computer sends signals to a small receiver, which then connects to the TV with a single HDMI High Definition Multimedia Interface cable. Some receivers will also have the RCA connectors yellow for video and red and white for audio, just in case your TV does not have HDMI inputs. Intel has specifically engineered this technology into their second generation i. Wi. Di Wireless Display. Final method relies on the tried and true cable. This used to be an unspeakable ordeal, but today, using HDMI, it has become simple. There remain a seemingly endless number of permutations of the cable method, given the many different types of computer outputs and television inputs that have evolved over the years. The possible combinations of connectors, cables, adaptors, converters and alike can be so convoluted, that Im not even going to get into trying to explain every audio and video option. HOW TO CONNECT YOUR Wi Fi TV TO A Wi Fi PCThe assumption here is that you already have a home Wi Fi network, your computer is Wi Fi equipped and you either have a TV with built in Wi Fi, or Wi Fi Ready with the adaptor installed following the manufacturers instructions. Note Instructions will vary with the manufacturer of the TV andor PC. Read the user manuals. Turn on the TV and Computer. From the TV menu enable the Wi Fi mode. Select the Wi Fi input on the TV as you would Video 1, DVR, etc. On the PC, you should be prompted to select the Wi Fi connection to the TV. Some PC manufactures notably Sony have a dedicated button on their laptops to activate this connection. Follow the TV manufacturers instructions on how to link the TV with your Wi Fi network. It may be necessary to enter the security key or password to allow your network to recognize the TV as an access point. A re boot of the network router may be necessary. The TV may display a four digit passcode for you to enter on the PC. The PC should then recognize the TV as a device connection. Even with the correct input selected on the TV, you may not see a picture. If so go to the PCs Control Panel and select Adjust screen resolution. You will see images for two different displays. Click on display number 2. Now choose Extend the desktop onto this monitor. Click Apply. 1. 5. The HDTV screen should now show the Windows desktop photo. If prompted, click Keep display settings. You may need to adjust the resolution to get a larger image on the TV. Open windows on the PC screen may need to be dragged to the TV. You should be set, but be warned that Wi Fi networks can be finicky when it comes to adding devices or making changes. At least there arent any cables to deal with. Note Mac users will have a similar multi screen set up procedure through System PreferencesDisplaysArrangementDisplay, to either extend the desktop to two screens, or Mirror exactly whats on the computer onto the TV. HOW TO CONNECT YOUR Wi Fi READY TV TO A Wi Fi PCFollow the same instructions as above AFTER you have installed the Wi Fi adaptor aka dongle in the TV with the USB connector. Everything else is the same procedure. IF YOUR TV ISNT WIRELESS YOU CAN STILL CUT THE CORD ALMOSTDont have the latest and greatest TV with built in or Wi Fi Ready capability You can still enjoy the freedom of connecting wirelessly to your computer. A number of third party manufacturers offer wireless receiver solutions. Basically its a separate box a Wi Fi receiver that then connects to the television by a cable. Many of the new ones are based on Intel Wi. Di, so youll need a computer with the proper microprocessor. HOW TO INSTALL A COMBINATION WIRELESS CABLE SYSTEM1. Connect an HDMI cable from the receiver to an input on the TV. Plug the receiver into an AC outlet and turn it on. Power up the PC and TV. Select the HDMI input on the TV the receiver is plugged into. Push the activation button on the PC. Because of the way Windows sometimes operates with multiple screens, you may need to also go through steps 9 through 1. Again, this is similar to the add on Wi Fi module that can be plugged to Wi Fi Ready TVs USB port. Instead an audiovideo cable runs from the new wireless receiver to audiovideo inputs on the TV. Download Games Hp Ukuran 320 X 240 Pic. Ideally that would be a single HDMI cable. This is the most up to date method for transporting audio and video from Blu ray players, DVRs, cable boxes and other devices to High Definition televisions. All modern TVs are fitted with multiple HDMI inputs. If your TV is pre HDMI, this is where it begins to get complicated. Youll need to find a Wi Fi receiver that also has the type of audiovideo connectors compatible with your TV typically the yellow, red and white RCA connectors, which some do. NO Wi Fi YOU CAN STILL CONNECT DIRECTLY WITH CABLESAssuming theres no wireless option, and the television and computer have to be tethered by cables, you can still get the job done. Which cables, connectors and adaptors you might need depends on the hardware in question. The simplest and best scenario is that your computer has an HDMI output, and the television has an HDMI input. If so, youre home free. Just plug one end of the HDMI cable into the TV, and plug the other into the computer. However, even with the correct HDMI input selected on the TV, you may not see a picture. Go through the same steps 9 1. Wi Fi to be sure Windows knows how to handle the multiple screens. Again, Mac users may have to make similar adjustments through System PreferencesDisplaysArrangementDisplay. The restriction youll face now is the length of the cable versus how close you want to be to the big screen. You dont need to buy expensive HDMI cables.
